Dental Implants

Dental implants are the best way to replace missing teeth. They are a means of replacing missing teeth that are closest to natural teeth. Dental implant is an artificial cylindrical titanium stud used to replace missing root of a tooth. A small opening is created in the jaw bone after reflecting the gum. Implant is placed in the precise hole drilled in the jaw bone and the gums are sutured (stitched) back. After sometime the bone grows around implant and it becomes rock-solid (osseointegration) in the bone. This implant is used as an anchor to attach missing teeth (implant supported prosthesis) or to make removable denture more retentive (implant supported over denture).

Advantages of Dental Implants

  • Prevents bone loss - After extraction of teeth there is not adequate stimulus to the bone. This leads to resorption of bone (disuse atrophy) in the region from where teeth have been extracted. Dental implants are the only way to replace missing teeth which prevent bone loss by providing stimulation to bone. The bone loss increases as time elapses after extraction. This is the reason we try to place implants at the time of extraction (immediate implants) or within a few weeks of extraction of teeth.
  • Implants are conservative for adjacent teeth - We don’t have to reduce adjacent teeth in size as in the case of other means to replace missing teeth by fixed teeth namely dental bridges.
  • Functional - Dental implants function closely to natural teeth, transmitting the occlusal load to the underlying bone as is done by roots of natural teeth.
  • Esthetic - Dental implants look almost like our natural teeth.
